For those of us from colder climates, summer – and even spring – seems like a good distance away. For that reason, it may surprise you to learn that Major league Baseball spring training games start today! Those of us who are going to Florida or Arizona on business travel may forget that an opportunity to see the best baseball players on the planet is just a short drive away, for a fraction of the cost of what you will pay to see them during the regular season.
If you are traveling to Phoenix, the training facilities of 15 teams are in the surrounding cities. To the east in the Scottsdale and Tempe areas are teams such as the San Francisco Giants, the odds on 2016 World Series favorite Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies. The Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers and several other teams are based to the west. Many cities conveniently house more than one team. The World Champion Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers are both located in the city of Surprise, for example.
In Florida, spring training facilities for the other 15 MLB teams are spread around a handful of larger cities. In Tampa and surrounding communities, the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers play. In the area of Fort Myers, you can see the stars of the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. If travel takes you West Palm Beach, the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals are just north of the city and slightly further up the eastern coast of the state are the facilities of the New York Mets.
If your favorite team wasn’t mentioned above, mlb.mlb.com/springtraining/ features maps and schedules for each Cactus League (Arizona-based) and Grapefruit League (Florida-based) team.
So make time for a game the next time your business travel has you headed to Arizona and Florida. And let us know any Spring Training tips you have to share.
