New mobile app being tested at Atlanta airport

August 28, 2014 Mark Dauner

Travelers can now test a new mobile passport control app at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport thanks to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Skift reported that the new mobile app pilot launched Aug. 27 and is available for use by American or Canadian citizens.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the only one in the country piloting the mobile program. According to Skift, travelers can skip traditional customs declarations paper forms after creating a profile based on their passport information.

Travelers are then required to fill out the "New Trip" section where they'll answer customs declarations questions. Once this section is complete travelers are issued a receipt that allows them to clear customs. The receipt is valid for four hours, which they must show to a Border Patrol Agent along with their passport.

There are separate lines at the airport so that travelers don't have to wait in the traditional customs lines. According to the source, families with four members or fewer can enter their information together through the mobile program.

The intention of the app is to make the customs declaration process easier for international travelers.

However, Jennifer Evanitsky, a CBP spokeswoman, told Skift that there was no word on when travelers of other nationalities will be eligible to use the mobile program.

"It is due to the collecting of biometrics," Evanitsky said. "On our kiosks, for example, travelers' fingerprints are captured."

Skift reported that there will be at least one more airport that pilots the app before the end of 2014.

The app is currently only available for iOS users but is expected to be released on Android devices in the fall.
