New York travelers: Trusted Travel Program enrollment suspended

February 6, 2020 Sara Cartwright

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would be suspending New York residents from enrolling in Trusted Traveler Programs including Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS and FAST. TSA PreCheck was not among the programs affected.

The DHS stated in their announcement, "Although DHS would prefer to continue our long-standing cooperative relationship with New York on a variety of these critical homeland security initiatives, this Act and the corresponding lack of security cooperation from the New York DMV requires DHS to take immediate action to ensure DHS’s efforts to protect the Homeland are not compromised."

At this time, those already enrolled in these Trusted Traveler programs may continue to use them until they expire. The new policy only affects new enrollments or re-enrollments for New York residents. What is not affected by the Global Entry enrollment suspension in New York?

For those affected by this policy, there are a number of ways to still save time at the airport, such as using the above mentioned TSA PreCheck for domestic travel, as well as using Mobile Passport to expedite customs processing when re-entering the United States from travel abroad.
